Corrie's 50th - First Episode Review

As part of the 50th celebrations, ITV announced it would be airing the very first episode of Coronation Street again in-between Monday 6th episodes.

The episode was originally aired on 9th December 1960 and 50 years later it's still going strong and is the most watched soap in the country. Corrie has launched so many actors career and it's a fantastic show that can easily combine drama and humor creatively.

The only original cast member remaining in the show today is William Roache who plays Ken Barlow. He was in the very first episode and has had a colourful history on the show including 27 romances!! He recently entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest cast member of a serial drama, along with the show it's self.

The actual episode was good, but for my generation odd. First of all, it was black and white! I've obviously seen black and white shows/films before but watching Corrie like that was an odd experience. I had a rough idea who the characters were including Ken Barlow and Elsie Tanner and Ena Sharples and Annie Walker. It was actually hard to understand what the actors were saying. Sometimes they talked so fast and mumbled. It's hard to believe that this was broadcast live originally. They seem so calm and collected.

It was nice to see this episode. I had thought about watching it on YouTube several times, but once I heard ITV were repeating it for the 50th I thought I'd wait.

This episode was watched by 6.76 million people!

What did you make of the first episode?
